Rhinoplasty

Conveniently located to serve new york city and pomona

One of the most common plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty is performed to reshape, reduce, or augment a person’s nose, remove a hump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, or to correct injury, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing.

Results depend on the patient’s nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age (teenagers should have had their growth spurt).

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

The best candidates for a rhinoplasty are healthy individuals who want to correct the shape or reduce the size of their nose. A patient may undergo rhinoplasty for cosmetic and/or functional purposes—the surgery can help candidates achieve their dream nose or correct an obstructed nasal airway.

Rhinoplasty candidates must be prepared to avoid smoking and drinking before the procedure. It is recommended that candidates stop smoking for at least 4 to 6 weeks beforehand and avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours beforehand.

The best candidates for nasal surgery do not have any medical conditions that risk slower healing. It is important to develop realistic expectations in terms of results.

YOUR RHINOPLASTY CONSULTATION

A rhinoplasty consultation will focus on your appearance goals and your eligibility for the procedure. Various options for surgical techniques will be discussed with you. Dr. Glassman will help you visualize the possible outcome to help manage expectations.

Dr. Glassman will perform an examination of your nose and face. You must provide your complete medical history, and you may need to take a few lab tests to help the surgeon plan your procedure safely.

Once it is confirmed that you are eligible for a rhinoplasty, you will be given instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Please follow all instructions carefully.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR RHINOPLASTY

Before your rhinoplasty procedure, you will need to prepare your transportation to and from the surgical center. It is best to have someone else drive and accompany you during the first 24 hours to make sure you get as much assistance as needed.

Request for time off work (5 to 7 days) to ensure that get enough rest. Perform any strenuous tasks you need to do at home before your rhinoplasty appointment.

Preparing meals for one week and setting up a resting place with enough pillows are highly recommended to help your body recover smoothly. A neck pillow can help your head stay in place, ensuring that physical contact with your nose is avoided while you are asleep.

The night before your procedure, take a bath and wash your hair with mild products to prevent exposing the nose to bacteria.

THE PROCEDURE

Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure performed under either local or general anesthesia and lasts one to two hours unless more extensive work needs to be done.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Glassman will create incisions either inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or on the external strip of tissue between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty).

Next, soft tissue, bone, and/or cartilage will be altered as needed. A graft may be harvested and placed for structural purposes. Finally, incisions will be closed with sutures.

THE RECOVERY PROCESS

After rhinoplasty, expect bruising and swelling; these will fade in time. Keeping your head elevated at all times is key, and cold compresses can also help with swelling reduction. You will be prescribed pain medication for relief, along with antibiotics.

Take time off from work for around 5 to 7 days. You can resume your day-to-day activities once cleared to do so, and you must avoid any activities that may cause trauma to the nose. Physically strenuous activities must be avoided.

Side effects from rhinoplasty are short-term. Bruising and swelling will fade in time. Infections only happen if the incision sites are not properly cleaned. As long as the correct cleaning solution is used and proper bandaging is applied, a smooth recovery is easy to achieve.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF A RHINOPLASTY LAST?

The results of a rhinoplasty are permanent. It is important to set realistic expectations that the body will naturally age through time. Please practice good aftercare and commit to maintaining a healthy skin care routine.

RHINOPLASTY COST

Insurance may cover rhinoplasty if it is done for reconstructive or medical reasons, but likely not for cosmetic purposes. The price of cosmetic rhinoplasty is determined based on factors like the specific techniques used and anesthesia fees.
