It is said that Cleopatra’s beautiful nose was the feature that reportedly made Julius Caesar fall for her, ultimately changing the course of history. There are many who wish they had features so attractive that they would be remembered for centuries to come. For anyone who wants the perfect nose, medical science has the answer: rhinoplasty.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to change the structure of a person’s nose. It is primarily done in order to enhance the person’s overall appearance. It can also be performed for medical reasons like correction of breathing-related issues.
Your First Step: The Rhinoplasty Consultation
Rhinoplasty is customized based on each individual’s unique case. As part of a consultation at our office, Dr. Glassman evaluates the patient’s features, the structure of their nose, and their overall appearance and discusses the patient’s goals with them.
He performs a health assessment to determine if the patient is right for this procedure. Part of the examination is evaluating whether or not the procedure would lead to any breathing-related issues later. This will determine how the surgery is carried out.
Once the consultation is complete, if the procedure is deemed to be a good choice for the patient, Dr. Glassman creates a surgical plan for carrying out the rhinoplasty and sets a date for the surgical session.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure and Its Results
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning that the patient can usually return home the same day with no overnight stay required. It may be done under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. This is decided by Dr. Glassman and the patient.
During the procedure, Dr. Glassman makes an incision at the base of the columella or within the nostrils, depending on the initial evaluation done. The reshaping of the nose is then performed. Adjustments are made to the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue. Cartilage may also be taken from another part of the patient’s body to create a graft, which can add support to the nasal architecture.
Recovery and Healing After Rhinoplasty
Though rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, Dr. Glassman will monitor the patient after the procedure to ensure that they are ready to return home. Dressings and a splint to protect the nose are usually put in place and will be removed in a few days’ time.
The doctor advises the patient on post-surgical precautions to be taken, which include maintaining a proper diet and being very careful when blowing the nose, brushing, and performing strenuous physical activities. Use of eyeglasses on the nose will be restricted for a few days.
Follow-up visits are needed so that recovery can be gauged. Within a few weeks, the results of the procedure can be seen. Post-surgical swelling and bruising will go down over time.
